School of Science Colloquium: TCNJ Science Classes Abroad – September 17, 2013

September 17, 2013
4:00PM-5:00PM
SCP-101

This colloquium will feature three School of Science faculty members who each taught a course abroad in the summer of 2013.  Please join Dr. Don Lovett (Biology), Dr. Lynn Bradley (Chemistry), and Dr. David McGee (Physics) as they discuss their academic and cultural experiences abroad.  Faculty and students alike can expect to learn about opportunities for teaching or taking such a course in the future.

Dr. Don Lovett, Department of Biology

“The Natural History of the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador”

This course explores the natural history of the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador (including geology, climate, and the ecology of plants and animals) with a reflection on interactions between these and the history, culture and economics of the Islands and continental Ecuador from pre-colonial to modern times.  Students learn about fundamental processes and principles of evolution, as well as experience a cultural immersion.

Dr. Lynn Bradley, Department of Chemistry

“Exploring London through the World of Art and Chemistry”

In July, we traveled with 11 students to London, Englad.  Through hands-on field experiences, art and science projects, student presentations and on-site and classroom lectures, the course examined how chemistry and art interface.

Dr. David McGee, Department of Physics

“Science in Early 20th Century Germany – The Birth of Atomic Physics and the Rise of Uncertainty”

12 TCNJ students visited Munich, Goettingen, and Berlin to study the history, technology , and personalities that combined in early 20th century Germany to radically change our understanding of atomic structure.
