Presentation Overview
How might you define an inclusive classroom? One definition is a classroom in which the instructor doesn’t see students as a “problem” but, rather, sees unstructured learning environments as the difficulty. By this definition, bringing more structure to a course should help to “level the playing field” for students from diverse backgrounds. In this talk, participants will see inclusive methods of pedagogy modeled and will leave being able to explain the components and benefits of a high-structure course. In her 13 years teaching introductory biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Kelly Hogan (B.S. from TCNJ 1996) has taught more than 13,000 students, and she will share insight about her own transition to a high structure, active learning classroom in the past six years. She has also helped lead a change for thousands more students each semester, as all introductory biology, chemistry, and physics courses at UNC have adopted a similar philosophy and format.

About Dr. Kelly Hogan
Hogan, Kelly with StudentsKelly Hogan is the Director of Instructional Innovation for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s College of Arts and Sciences and a professor and in the College’s Biology Department. Since 2004, she has been teaching 400-seat classes on campus using interactive teaching methods and technologies. Hogan’s approach centers on the philosophy that, with the right practice, everyone is capable of learning. By demonstrating the effectiveness of her methods in large lecture classes, her work has received national attention in publications such as The New York Times, The Atlantic, and The Washington Post.

Hogan works with many of Carolina’s faculty to help them re-imagine their teaching and she has also shared her techniques with educators from institutions across the state and nation. Her teaching has also impacted a student audience far beyond those in her UNC-Chapel Hill classes. As the co-author of several biology textbooks (Campbell Biology’s Concepts and Connections and Essential Biology), Hogan has reached hundreds of thousands of students globally. She has also been recognized by her students through ten different campus, state and national awards for teaching, mentoring, and advising. Hogan was the commencement speaker for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2015. She completed her undergraduate degree in biology at The College of New Jersey in Ewing, New Jersey (B.S., 1996) and earned her doctorate from UNC-Chapel Hill (Ph.D., 2001).
