Mathematics and Statistics Department Time: MARCH 21st, Thursday 11:30-12:30 SCP 229“Life of Pi: A Mathematical History”
Abstract: In honor of Pi Day, I will present a history of the famous mathematical constant. I will discuss the many ways it can be calculated, its unexpected appearances, and recent results from the last 15 years on how to calculate Pi efficiently in binary and hexadecimal. Time-permitting, analogues of Pi may also be discussed. The Guinness world record for reciting digits of Pi is 67,890 digits. We will have a contest to see which TCNJ student or faculty member can recite the most digits of Pi.
